St. Rose of Lima: A Brief History of our Parish

St. Rose of Lima Parish was founded in 1922, with the late Father William Power as its’ first pastor. In 1926, Father John Dignam was appointed pastor. It was he who built the St. Rose of Lima School and Auditorium in the year 1930. After rapid growth and with the addition of the school, a bigger and better church was constructed in 1937 and additional property was purchased in 1946 on the corner of 60th Street and Clarkson Ave. However, this soon became too small and with the generous donations of the parishioners and fundraisers plans for a new St. Rose of Lima Church began. In 1941 Father John Dignam passed away and was succeeded by Pastor, Father Maurice J. Ryan.

Under the direction of pastor Rev. Ryan, the business of planning the new permanent church of St. Rose of Lima Parish at Maywood was brought to conclusion late in the summer of 1952, and this beautiful new building was finally completed on December 8, 1953. Monsignor Ryan passed away in 1971. He was succeeded by Msgr. John Cummings who was here for five years and then succeeded by Rev. Msgr. George Duran in 1976. In 2002, Rev. David Velazquez was named pastor and his successor was Rev. Dario Miranda in 2011 who is the present pastor.

Breve Historia de Nuestra Parroquia

La parroquia de Santa Rosa de Lima fue constituída en 1922 siendo su primer párroco el padre William Power . En 1926, el Padre John Morgan . Fue él quien construyó la Escuela y el Auditorio de Santa Rosa de Lima en el año 1930. Para proveer al creciente número de feligreses y con la adición de la escuela, una iglesia mas grande y mejor fue construída en 1937 y se vio la necesidad de comprar espacio adicional en 1946 en la esquina de la calle 60 y la Clarkson Ave. Debido al contínuo crecimiento de la iglesia, con su cooperacion y con fondos reunidos por todos, planes para una nueva iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima comenzaron. En 1941, el Padre John Dignam falleció y su sucesor fue el Monseñor Maurice J. Ryan.

Santa Rosa, Bajo la dirección de su pastor, padre Ryan, se planeó la construcción del actual templo de Santa Rosa de Lima en Maywood. Se concluyó a finales del verano de 1952, y este hermoso edificio finalmente se inauguró en 1953. Monseñor Ryan falleció en 1971. Su sucesor fue Monseñor John Cummings quien estuvo al cargo por 5 años y su sucesor fue Reverendo Monseñor George Duran en 1976. En el 2002, el Padre David Velzaquez fue nombrado pastor y su sucesor fue el Padre Dario Miranda en el 2011 quien es el actual pastor.
