El Reino de los Cielos

El reino de los cielos, dice Jesús, se parece a un hombre que encuentra un tesoro en el campo y vende todo lo que tiene para comprar el campo. Hace una comparación parecida con el comerciante de perlas finas. Tanto el hombre del campo como el comerciante de perlas finas andaban buscando algo. Las preguntas que nos podemos plantear son: ¿estamos buscando algo? ¿Nos creemos de verdad que hay un tesoro escondido o una perla preciosa? En otras palabras, ¿estamos dispuestos a venderlo todo por ese tesoro o esa perla? Se ha dicho muchas veces que nuestra sociedad vive en un tiempo de desencanto o desilusión. Si hubo un tiempo en el que soñamos que otro mundo era posible, hoy parece que a muchos nos parece inviable y no pensamos sino en cómo sobrevivir, en cómo ir tirando. Nada más. Es como si hubiésemos descubierto que no hay nada por lo que valga la pena venderlo todo; de hecho, no estamos dispuestos a sacrificar nada de lo poco que tenemos. No estamos seguros de que exista ningún tesoro escondido ni ninguna perla preciosa. No estamos seguros de que valga la pena luchar por el reino de los cielos. ¿Qué reino es ése? Después de años de lucha y de esfuerzo, ¿qué hemos logrado? Nos hemos quedado decepcionados. No hay nada por lo que luchar. ¡Dejémonos de sueños! Jesús sigue proponiendo un ideal absoluto. Por el reino de los cielos vale la pena dejarlo todo. ¿Qué es todo? Todo es la seguridad económica, la buena fama, las expectativas de la familia. Dejarlo todo significa vivir al estilo de Jesús, tratar de actuar como Jesús lo haría, ser portadores del amor de Dios para con los pobres y necesitados de todo tipo. Dejarlo todo significa no guiarse por los criterios egoístas de este mundo, dejar de acaparar y comenzar a compartir, relacionarse con los demás de forma gratuita y no con precio. Para dejarlo todo no hace falta abandoner materialmente a la familia o meterse en un convento. Se puede seguir en el mismo trabajo y vivir en la misma casa. La diferencia es que uno se guía por los criterios del Evangelio para vivir. Entonces se empieza a ser ciudadano del reino. Se adquiere una nueva identidad: la de hijo de Dios Padre y hermano en Jesús de todos los seres humanos. Para llegar ahí es necesario creer firmemente que hay un tesoro y que ese tesoro es lo mejor que podemos encontrar en la vida; que por ese tesoro vale la pena dejarlo todo. Que Dios nos de discernimiento y sabiduría como a Salomón para conocer lo que es justo y bueno.

The Kingdom of Heaven

The kingdom of heaven, Jesus says, is like a man who finds a treasure in the field and sells all he has to buy the field. He makes a similar comparison with the merchant of precious pearls. Both the man of the field and the merchant of pearls were looking for something. The questions we can ask ourselves are: Are we looking for something? Do we really believe that there is a hidden treasure or a precious pearl? In other words, are we willing to sell everything for the treasure or the pearl? It has been said many times that our society lives in a time of disenchantment or disillusionment. If there was a time when we dreamt that another world was possible, it now appears that for many of us it is no longer viable and we do not think about anything else but how to survive and how to get by. Nothing more. It is as if we had discovered that there is nothing to be worth our selling everything; in fact, we are not willing to sacrifice anything for what little we do have. We are not sure there are a hidden treasure and a precious pearl. We are not sure it is worth fighting for the kingdom of heaven. What kingdom is that? After years of struggles and efforts, what have we achieved? We have remained disappointed. There is nothing to fight for. Let’s stop dreaming! Jesus continues to offer a wonderful ideal. The kingdom of heaven is worth our leaving everything. What is it? Everything is economic security, good reputation, expectations of the family. Leaving everything means to live as Jesus did, trying to act as Jesus would, being carriers of God’s love for the poor and needy of every kind. Leaving everything means not being guided by the selfish criteria of this world, ceasing to accumulate things and beginning to share, interacting with others for free and with no price. To leave everything there is no need to physically abandon the family or join a convent. You can keep the same work and live in the same house. The difference is that one is guided by the criteria of the Gospel to live. Then you become a citizen of the kingdom. You acquire a new identity as a child of God the Father and brother or sister in Jesus of all human beings. To get there we must believe firmly that there is a treasure and that such treasure is the best that we can find in life; that it is worthwhile to leave everything for this treasure. May God give us discernment and wisdom as he gave to Solomon to know what is right and good.
